Thursday, July 09, 2009
Until mentioned by my professor, I did not know that we had our very own Shakespeare company. For those that don't know, you now know. Currently, the Richmond Shakespeare Company is putting on "Shakespeare Under the Stars" at Agecroft Hall.

For more information, visit their website:

A production of A Midsummer Night's Dream ends this weekend. From July 16 - August 2, they are putting on Hamlet.

Happy Slurpee Day 7-11

Thursday, July 09, 2009

"Every July 11, 7-Eleven stores across the country celebrate their birthday by giving away free Slurpees. This year the convenience store chain turns 82, and about 5 million icy beverages will be handed out at participating locations.

The company is touting this as the "biggest Slurpee giveaway ever." In addition, the Slurpee cups will come with codes that can be redeemed for $7.11 lawn seats to select Live Nation shows." [Pop Candy]

Restaurant Review: The Black Sheep

Sunday, July 05, 2009
Looking for a new place to eat, I was pleased to come across a gem of a restaurant located on 901 W. Marshall St. Hiding just off W. Broad Street at the corner of Goshen and W. Marshall is a small local restaurant called...........

The Black Sheep

To learn more about The Black Sheep, please visit their web site:
The Black Sheep

The Black Sheep is owned and operated by Kevin Roberts and Amy Hess. Both owners have a history in the food business and bring a variety of skills and knowledge to the job.

The Black Sheep
901 W. Marshall St.
(804) 648-1300

Sunday 9am to 8pm
Monday - Thursday 9am to 9pm
Friday - Saturday 9am to 10pm

* Decor/Seating 8/7 - Simple, Artsy, Clean
* Greeting/Wait staff 7/8.5
* Selection/Availability 9/9 - Was sad they were out of deviled eggs (how cool,
a place that offers deviled eggs as a side - YUM!)
* Presentation 7.5
* Quality 10
* Taste 8.5 (10 for Dessert)
* Price $ - Very reasonable

The Black Sheep offers a wide selection of choices from breakfast dishes to frittatas to crusty, crunch baguette sandwiches to dinner entrees that honor a variety of cuisine from Southern to Italian to Creole. There is something for everyone.

One trend I seem to notice with their food is layering. It's not a hodgepodge of this and that but rather a skillful layering of flavors.

There were four of us chowing down: me, my husband, and our friends Adam and Heather.

I had the Huevos Nuevos, the husband had the Bayou Breakfast, Adam had the CSS Shenandoah, and Heather had the Fedora Frittata and a hearty cup of South Indian Soup.

All of us were very satisfied with our dishes. Heather and I traded thoughts and we both felt that the food tasted very fresh. The seasoning ratios were balanced. The grilled baguette served with our dishes was delish and complimentary to the food.

We were instantly served barrel glasses of iced water. From the drink list we each ordered Sun Drops and me, I ordered a grape Ne-Hi.

For dessert, Heather and I snagged a La Brea Tarpit, which is actually a dark chocolate creme brulee with Animals crackers tucked in fossily measure. The custard was creamy and delicious. The smooth satiny texture was a treat to the senses. For a chocoholic - this is a must have.

...

We had a really good time. Everyone seemed happy and content.

I really highly recommend checking The Black Sheep out. I know I will be back for sure.

Culinary Classes

Wednesday, July 01, 2009
Does taking culinary classes make you fu-fu? I decided as a graduation treat to sign up for two culinary classes at Sur la Table. One class is on making sushi and hand rolls. The other is an international cooking class. Both classes are hands on. If they weren't then I wouldn't have signed up.

As a state employee, I am going to keep my vocalization to a minimum on this, but I can just say, it's about time.

She & Him Clone

Wednesday, July 01, 2009
I recently discovered that Scarlett Johansson and Pete Yorn have collaborated together on an album. I have never listened to her solo album, but I thought her pairing with Pete is a bit whimsical. They have a pleasant sound perhaps boring somewhat from She & Him, but I think think this works well for them. Now this comment is based off one song. We will see if the rest delivers.
